There are a number of Canadian immigration programs, among which the Federal Skilled Worker Program is considered to be one of the best. For prospective overseas applicants, skilled migration is one of the most accessible routes to immigrate to Canada.
However, many prospective immigrants are not fully aware of the Quebec Skilled Worker Program, and even those who are aware of it often have certain misconceptions about how it works.
If you are considering migrating to this Canadian province under the skilled category, there are a few important things you should know to make your application successful.
Quebec Skilled Worker: French language test requirements
Many people assume that a high level of French is required to qualify for the Quebec Skilled Worker Program, but in reality Quebec welcomes applicants with different levels of French proficiency. Some applicants qualify with lower French ability, while others may need a higher level, depending on their other qualifications.
The selection process considers factors such as work experience, education and language proficiency, with points awarded for each. A single applicant must score a minimum of 55 points, and an applicant with a spouse or common-law partner must score a minimum of 63 points.
A university degree is not required to score high points
Points are awarded to applicants qualified with a university or college degree and with diplomas in technical or vocational courses. Applicants with high-school diplomas that include vocational or technical components can also receive points. The program awards points not only for the level of education but also for the field of study or training.
A spouse and children can also help you score points
In the Quebec Skilled Worker Program, the qualifications of both the applicant and their spouse or common-law partner are counted. Points are awarded for the spouse based on five factors: education, work experience, area of training, age and French language proficiency. Applicants with children aged 21 or under can also receive additional points.
A job offer or specific work experience is not mandatory
Many people believe a job offer from Quebec or Canada is required to qualify for the skilled worker program, but that is not the case, and prior experience in one specific field is not mandatory either. Professionals across many occupations, such as computer and IT specialists, accountants, professors and teachers, butchers, welders and plumbers, can apply under the Quebec skilled migration program. That said, holding a valid Quebec job offer can earn you additional points.
A clear path to Canadian permanent residency
Applicants who apply under the Quebec Skilled Worker Program and intend to obtain permanent residence can do so. Once approved, applicants are issued a Permanent Resident visa, which, like any other Canadian PR status, gives them the right to live and work anywhere in Canada.
